New State Health Care Organization Takes Shape

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) is now working to foster creation of a major new player in Indiana's health sciences environment: the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research (ICRSER).

We currently live at an unprecedented time in Medical History. The advantages and implications of new therapeutic discoveries are becoming clear. The advancement of Indiana through the BioCrossroads initiative will be dependent on partnership and collaboration.

Academic medicine begins with scientific investigators who seek private support for preliminary data complemented by faculty creating a stimulating environment within their laboratories and classrooms for students. This convergence of foci will be the thrust of the new Indiana Center of Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research.

"Our vision is to create a world-class research and infrastructure to leverage Indiana's significant scientific, educational and corporate entities in the rehabilitation arena," said SHRS Dean Mark S. Sothmann. "Our goal is to capture a large share of available Research & Development funding, stimulate Indiana's life sciences economy, and improve workforce development."

The Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research will be a permanent collaboration among strategic partners whose combined expertise in science, engineering, technology and health care will create a powerful, focused infrastructure in Indiana health care industry.

The Center's focus to acquire grants and contracts for research and application in the arena of rehabilitation; to strengthen Indiana's world-class orthopedic industry; and to improve quality of life and employability of people who suffer from disabling conditions related to mobility.

Founding partners include Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, the Indiana University Foundation, the Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center and corporate partners ViovMetrics, Inc. and Robot One, Inc., and Cook Biotech, Inc., among others.
