Leadership Education Excellence in Pediatric Nutrition

Nutrition in the 21st century will have an even more vital role in assuring that the infants and children of our nation have bright futures as health care moves from treatment of disease-to-disease prevention and health promotion.

Nutrition is integral to the health of the whole child — body, mind, emotions and attitudes. Food not only sustains the child, it also may affect his risk for diseases, disability or death (Surgeon General's Report, 1988). Consequently, nutrition services are an essential component of coordinated and comprehensive, family centered health services (Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition, 1988).

The Leadership Education Excellence in Pediatric Nutrition Program in the Indiana University School of Medicine, James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children, will:

  1. Provide or enhance the pediatric nutrition knowledge, clinical expertise and leadership skills of four dietitians/nutritionists through leadership development in pediatric nutrition clinical fellowships (4-6 months, total 2 FTE yearly) and, for Years 2-5, four dietitians/nutritionists in e-learning clinical update practica (6 mos ea);
  2. Provide one national or regional continuing education workshop yearly, one 2-3 day national pediatric nutrition conference with 4-6 hours of distance education (videostreaming), and, for alternate years, one 2-day leadership development workshop for the Midwest MCH Nutrition Leader Institute; and
  3. Provide state, regional and national consultation and technical assistance yearly.
