
Nutrition in the 21st century will have an even more vital role in assuring that the infants and children of our nation have bright futures as health care moves from treatment of disease-to-disease prevention and health promotion.
Nutrition is integral to the health of the whole child — body, mind, emotions and attitudes. Food not only sustains the child, it also may affect his risk for diseases, disability or death (Surgeon General's Report, 1988). Consequently, nutrition services are an essential component of coordinated and comprehensive, family centered health services (Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition, 1988).
